And the award for Best South African TV Series goes to…

high rollers

The TV and Film industry in South Africa have grown in leaps and bounds in the last couple of years and this is very evident in the latest offering by SABC 3: High Rollers.

The series is a Dallas-like family drama set against the back drop of a multi-million rand casino situated in the north of Johannesburg.  The show centers around three “brothers” – the casino kingpin David (Antony Coleman), his good guy-gone bad-gone good again-trying to stay that way  older brother Paul (Justin Strydom) and David’s trusted right-hand man Thato “TT” Mogale (Fezile Mpela) – utterly divided by their love for money, family and God.  The show comes complete with a desperate housewife (Rolanda Marais), interfering matriarchal mother (Brumilda van Rensburg), bratty children, villains and vixens.  From the casino floor to the dinner table to the bedroom, each character goes on a roller-coaster journey threatening to derail at every turn.  The thin line between loyalty and betrayal is pushed and extended to its very limit.

Producer Luke Rous says:  “We envisaged the casino as a metaphor for life and how we gamble on a daily basis with love, religion and family. Of course, the central focus is on the human drama and the interpersonal dynamics at play, with the characters’ vices and ambition threatening to destroy their lives and those of their loved ones.”

The 15th episode of this 26-part series airs tonight at 20:30.  Don’t have access to SABC 3 or want to catch up on all the drama right from the start?  No problem, SABC 3 have been generous enough to make all episodes available on YouTube.  Do yourself a favor and check it out.

I for one can’t wait and Tuesday are now officially my favorite day of the week!

I am a free spirit born in the Free State, 20 years to late. I am Ying and Yang. I am the girl next door who prefers daisies and peace rallies, but can just as easily rock at a rally. I love all things Latin and am sure that in my previous life (if that existed) I was Spanish. The dark side of me, however, tells me that I lived in Mother Russia. On a quest to find my happy-ever-after, I am in constant search of answers to all things that makes us human. What we do and, more importantly, why we do it. I hope you enjoy my rambles and would love to hear from you!
